Meade flair as a rider across country and his blond good looks had already raised the public profile of his niche sport by the time his romantic attachment to Princess Anne, during her own early years as a competitor, elevated eventing to the front pages. A linchpin of the British team for 21 years, Meade won team gold at the Mexico Olympics in 1968, and individual and team gold at Munich in 1972. He achieved results far better than might have been expected given the ability of many of the horses he rode, and was at his best when riding at the major events and championships. He also worked on projects to improve safety helmets and back protectors. In 1974 he was appointed OBE. Meade married, in 1977, Angela Farquhar, whose family has long links to the Duke of Beaufort Hunt.
He took great pride in following the eventing career of their son Harry. was diagnosed with cancer in October. He is survived by his wife and by their two sons and one daughter; another son predeceased him.
